Broncos win Super Bowl without BC

There are no BC guys on the Broncos' roster, so no Eagles picked up Super Bowl rings Sunday. Luke Kuechly performed well, but football is a team sport and Denver had the better defense on Sunday.

There was lots of talk prior to the game if Kuechly was the all-time best Eagle in the NFL. I still think it is too early to tell and still think Matt Ryan has the better chance to retire with that title. Kuechly has a Defensive MVP, but elite linebacker's windows are much shorter than QBs. As Peyton Manning showed, Ryan might have another eight or nine more competitive seasons. In the end, I want them both to do well. I also hope we send a lot more guys to the NFL over the next few years so that others enter the "best Eagle" competition.

Both Matt and Luke are fantastic people. However, NFL players are not gods like the Roman emperors. College football is "a means to an end" and not an end in itself. If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? Matt had receivers who did not make the NFL. Many became tinkers and tailors. Are they any less worthy of adulation for the discipline instilled by BC? Pro football and pro basketball have lost their way. Notre Dame has noted with alarm the move toward a semi pro status. A case in point is Rich Gunnell. We all have wives, sisters, and mothers. Respect is one of the virtues taught by BC as an antithesis to the current climate of hoes and drugs. To the great credit of Cam Newton, he congratulated Matt after his only regular loss. He did the same to Payton when he waded through the crowd. That is the real goal of sports. Actually, Lesley Visser and Elizabeth Hasselbech are two of the classiest individuals produced by BC. Neither one is an all star quarterback nor a MVP defensive linebacker.

We have 2 guys in the HOF. Matt or Luke would have to be elected to the hall, to be considered the best. IMO.

Elizabeth Hasselbeck? Among the 150,000 alum, surely we can find someone else besides a talking head. Tip O'Neill, John Kerry maybe?

What about Bill Romonowski? He was a dirty and dominating linebacker. He played 16 years in the NFL and has 4 Super Bowl rings. I don't known how he is not heads above any other BC player in the NFL.

Good point, Hoib. I forgot about Art Donovan. Also, never knew about Ernie Stautner. 14 seasons and 9 Pro Bowls. Pretty good. Donovan made 5 Pro Bowls. Ryan has been to 3 Pro Bowls in 8 seasons, but I have a feeling he will never sniff the Super Bowl.

Did a little more digging. Incredibly the 2 BC guys in the hall played together for 3 years at BC, but the teams were just barely above 500. Ernie is only one of 2 Steelers to have his # retired, the other being Mean Joe. Think of all the great players they've had, yet he's one of 2 who's # was retired. All Pro 10 times, one more than Mean Joe, or Merlin Olsen. Elected to the Hall, first year of eligibility. He accomplished all this on about the worst team in the NFL during his playing career. To paraphrase Leon Spinks, Luke and Matt, are the latest, but Ernie's the greatest. Not likely anyone will surpass him.
